Dark Hollow Woods Committee
Oakmont Borough has made significant strides in the restoration and preservation of Dark Hollow Woods. The collaborative efforts between the Borough Council, local organizations, and various experts have laid the foundation for a comprehensive approach to addressing environmental challenges and improving the area’s natural habitat.
Here’s a summary of the key actions and plans:
Committee Formation and Goals
In August 2023, Oakmont Borough Council established a committee focused on restoring and maintaining Dark Hollow Woods. The committee is made up of directors representing: the community, a master gardener, the Garden Club of Oakmont, the Recreation Board, and the Shade Tree Committee.
Master Plan
Master Plan Development: The committee worked with Environmental Planning & Design to create a Master Plan that was adopted by the Borough Council in June 2024. This plan identifies and addresses three key areas of focus:
- Stormwater Management
- Restoration
- Invasive Species Management
Stormwater Management
The borough’s engineer has designed plans to address stormwater issues coming from Pennsylvania Avenue, Fifteenth Street, and Crystal Drive. The DCED grant application for funding is in place, with work expected to begin in Spring 2025.
Riparian Buffer Repairs
Oakmont was awarded a DCNR grant for riparian buffer repairs, with work slated to begin in Spring 2025.
Invasive Species Management
The Garden Club of Oakmont has been actively managing knotweed. Areas where the knotweed has been eradicated are now ready for the planting of native species plants, bushes, and shrubs.
Tree Planting and Natural Reforestation
In March 2024, twenty-five trees were planted near the meadow, and ten aspen trees were planted in October 2024.
Installed fencing in some areas of DHW to allow the woods to naturally reforest itself, providing a sustainable approach to ecosystem regeneration.
Future Plans and Next Steps
The Spring of 2025 will be a critical time for initiating the planned work on stormwater management and riparian buffer restoration.
The ongoing work by the Garden Club to control invasive species and reintroduce native plants will continue to improve the health of the woods.
The natural reforestation efforts through fencing and careful planning will help restore biodiversity over time.
This plan is a well-thought-out approach that integrates ecological restoration with community engagement, addressing immediate needs while building for long-term sustainability, following the Master Plan.
